IWBI Recognizes Policy Champions for Leading Efforts to Advance Healthy Building Policy
IWBI Policy Champions include Senator Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Congressman Cory Mills (FL) and Mayors Francis Suarez (Miami), Steven Fulop (Jersey City) and David Holt (Oklahoma City)
(Washington, D.C. / New York, September 26, 2023) – The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the global authority on healthy buildings, organizations and communities, announced today a group of elected leaders recognized as IWBI Policy Champions for their work to advance healthy building policy. The five policymakers – Senator Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Congressman Cory Mills (FL) and Mayors Francis Suarez (Miami), Steven Fulop (Jersey City) and David Holt (Oklahoma City) – received the honor for their distinguished policy efforts to help scale healthy building solutions.
- U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH): Sen. Shaheen led pioneering policy work to create a pilot program that would prioritize clean indoor air in military housing. As part of her Senate amendment to this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Shaheen’s legislative effort focused on helping pave the way for deploying indoor air solutions to help protect the health of military families.
- U.S. Representative Cory Mills (R-FL-7): Congressman Mills, also focused on helping protect military families, led a similar amendment as Sen. Shaheen focused on creating a pilot program designed to improve indoor air quality in military housing. His amendment was proposed in the House version of NDAA.
- Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami, Fla.: Mayor Suarez has helped make Miami a national leader in healthy buildings by becoming the first city in the country to earn the WELL Health-Safety Rating across a portfolio of 10 municipal buildings and public parks, including City Hall. In addition, thanks to Mayor Suarez, Miami has taken these public buildings through the WELL Health-Safety Rating for a second year in a row, showing Miami’s continuing commitment to promoting a safer and healthier environment for its employees and all those who visit those buildings.
- Mayor Steven Fulop of Jersey City, N.J.: Mayor Fulop led the way for Jersey City to become the first city in New Jersey, and second in the country, to earn the WELL Health-Safety Rating across a portfolio of six municipal buildings, including its most visited buildings such as City Hall, Building of Public Works, Office of Emergency Management and Municipal Courts.
- Mayor David Holt of Oklahoma City, Okla.: In an effort to show a strong commitment to safer and healthier indoor environments in its municipal buildings, Mayor Holt helped led efforts to make Oklahoma City the first city in Oklahoma, and third in the country, to earn the WELL Health-Safety Rating across a portfolio of five municipal buildings, including City Hall.
“Through their policy leadership, each of these leaders is helping transform our buildings to protect and enhance human health and well-being,” said Rachel Hodgdon, President and CEO, IWBI. “We are excited to recognize all of them as IWBI Policy Champions for their distinguished efforts to advance healthy building policy and we extend our thanks for their leadership.”
The IWBI Policy Champions program celebrates the positive impact and leadership of elected officials who have used their policy platforms to accelerate health and well-being in buildings and communities.
