Joanne M. Mahoney
President, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Joanie Mahoney currently serves as President at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York.
Joanie previously served eleven years as County Executive for Onondaga County in New York State. In her role as County Executive, Joanie was responsible for the clean-up of Onondaga Lake, a Superfund
site in her county. As part of that clean-up effort, Joanie created and implemented the award-winning Save The Rain program, a comprehensive storm water management program that became the first Green Infrastructure program to be included in a Federal Consent Order.
As a result of her environmental work, Joanie was named a Governing Magazine Public Official of the Year. She was also awarded a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership Award and a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Excellence Award. Under her leadership, Onondaga County was awarded the United States Water Prize. Prior to elective office, Joanie worked as an attorney both in private practice with the Harris Beach law
firm and for 5 years as a criminal prosecutor in the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.
Joanie received her B.S. from Syracuse University’s School of Management in 1987 and her Juris Doctor
from S.U.’s College of Law in 1990. Joanie and her husband, Marc Overdyk, have four sons and reside in
the Town of Dewitt.
