Raymond Yau, Ph.D, MBA, BSc

Dr Raymond Yau obtained his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He later earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr Yau worked as a professional consulting engineer in Ove Arup & Partners in London and Hong Kong for over 28 years in the field of designing low carbon sustainable buildings, and infrastructure and of sustainability consulting across the Globe. Being a Fellow and Director of Arup, he was responsible for notable projects such as Maison du Japon in Paris; Kansai International Airport Terminal; Shui-On Xintiandi projects in Chongqing, Wuhan and Foshan; Beijing Parkview Green, 2008 Beijing Olympic projects, Guangzhou Pearl Tower, Hong Kong CIC First Zero Carbon Building and Swire Properties’ One Taikoo Place office building in Hong Kong. He was awarded with Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Innovation Award for the Engineering Industry 2013 for his role as the Principal Innovator - Construction Category Champion CIC Zero Carbon Building.
Dr Raymond Yau joined Swire Properties in 2016 as the General Manager of Technical Services & Sustainable Development Department. In this role, Dr Yau formulates and executes innovation and sustainability strategies for the company’s technical services operations across Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China and the US to ensure its new and existing real estate assets are safeguarded and the standards in environmental performance, energy management and wellness environments are upheld.
Under his leadership, Dr Yau pioneers many new initiatives that are pivotal to the long-term sustainable development of Swire Properties. These include the formulation of the company- wide Sustainable Development SD 2030 Vision and Strategies in 2016; implementation of monitoring-based commissioning of all existing portfolios for deep energy savings since 2017; digital transformation of technical services and cloud-based AI energy management platforms in 2019; and the Climate Risks (Physical and Transition) Assessment of the company’s global assets. Dr Yau led the preparation of the Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) framework of the company’s first Green Bond of US$500m in 2018 in which both Green and WELL features are recognised CAPEX expenditure. In 2018 Dr Yau led the team to establish the Science-Based Targets (SBT) of Swire Properties for long-term decarbonization by 2030 in accordance with The Paris Agreement and climate science that was officially approved by SBTi in November 2019.
Swire Properties has been listed in two major global sustainability indices – DJSI World and the GRESB – in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and was ranked the top performing company of all industries in the 2018 and 2019 Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index. The company’s sustainable development efforts are recognised with the 2018 World Green Building Council’s Business Leadership in Sustainability Award and “Better Places for People” Special Recognition, as well as the U.S. Green Building Council’s 2018 Greenbuild China Leadership Award.
Dr Yau has been Board of Director of Business Environment Council (BEC) since 2016 and is member of the Climate Change Business Forum and Sustainable Living Environment Advisory Group of BEC. He is committee member of the China Green Building Council, and member of the Technical Taskforce on Mandatory Implementation of the Building Energy Code of HKSAR Government. Dr Yau was the President of Hong Kong Chapter of the American Society of Heating Ventilating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Regional Vice-Chair of Region XIII (Asia) of ASHRAE. Dr Yau was First Vice-chair and Director of BEAM Society (Hong Kong) and Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council.
He is Chartered Engineer and Fellow Member of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the UK Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.
Dr Yau received the 2019 International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) Leadership Award.
