Tony Esposito, Ph.D.

Director, Standard Development, Light Concept Lead

Dr. Esposito is an architectural lighting researcher, educator, and advocate. He holds a doctorate in Architectural Engineering from Penn State University with a minor in statistics. His domain specialties include color science, color discrimination, IES TM-30, human factors research methods, circadian metrics, and spectral modeling and optimization. His professional mission is to study, discover, and deliver evidence-based lighting solutions that save energy and promote human health and well-being.

Prior to joining IWBI, Dr. Esposito worked as an architectural lighting designer, a lighting quality researcher for a large international equipment manufacturer, then founded his own consultancy. As a full-time lighting research consultant, he led projects in Excel tool/process development, technical lighting analysis, grant writing, lighting education, and original academic research leading to peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Esposito has authored and co-authored more than a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles and has delivered more than 40 national and international presentations.

To IWBI, Dr. Esposito serves as Director and Lighting Concept Lead where he oversees the development of Lighting related activities. To the lighting industry, Dr. Esposito serves as a Co-Chair of the Color Committee of the Illuminating Engineering Society where he performs administrative functions, leads task groups performing original work, and assists in planning future work of the committee. In the IES Color Committee, he previously led the task group that developed IES TM-30 Annex E, a set of recommended specification criteria meant to ease the use of IES TM-30.

In his free time, Tony enjoys traveling, playing games (board games, video games, racquet sports), learning calligraphy (e.g., Engrosser’s Script), watercolor painting, drawing Islamic geometric patterns, and roller blading.
