Sergio Altomonte, PhD

Sergio Altomonte is Professor of Architectural Physics at the Universite’ catholique de Louvain (UC Louvain), Belgium, where he directs the research group Architecture et Climat. He obtained cum laude his BArch/MArch in Architecture in 1998 at the University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy. In 2001, he was awarded the Master in Architecture and Sustainable Development (MAS) at the EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland). In 2004, he was awarded his PhD in Environmental Design and Engineering at the University of Rome La Sapienza. Before joining UCLouvain in 2017, he has held academic appointments in Italy (University of Rome La Sapienza, 2001-04), Australia (Deakin University, Melbourne, 2004-07) and UK (University of Nottingham, 2007-17), and visiting positions in Denmark (KADK, Copenhagen, 2013-15) and US (University of California Berkeley, 200-12-18). He is a a board Member of the PLEA (Passive Low Energy Architecture) network, an international organisation engaged in a worldwide discourse on sustainable architecture and urban design through international annual conferences, workshops, and related activities. In 2014, Dr Altomonte was granted the title of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is an active Member of the CIBSE Society of Light and Lighting (MSLL) and of the CIBSE Daylight Group. Since 2018, he has been officially nominated to represent Belgium at the: International Energy Agency - Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA-SHC); CIE – Commission International de l’Eclairage; CEN - European Standardisation Committee.
