Michelle Ossmann
Director, Knowledge & Insights
Dr. Michelle Ossmann is a socio-spatial scientist, dedicated to improving health through rigorous research and design. Having received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Emory University, she spent 10 years in clinical care as an emergency department nurse and then neurocritical care nurse practitioner. It was during the redesign of her own ICU that Dr. Ossmann saw the need for clinician expertise from within design, earning a PhD in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology specializing in the intersection of architecture, culture and behavior— particularly the spatial and visual organization of buildings. At Herman Miller, Dr. Ossmann leads the health-environment research focus using human-centered design, qualitative, and quantitative research methods to inform product development and investigate the links between the built environment and social and organizational outcomes. Dr. Ossmann publishes and speaks widely on issues related to risk mitigation, the perception and experience of care, and workforce performance.
