Professor Yu Wang, MD, PhD

Chairman of Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control, Former Director General of Chinese CDC

Dr. Wang is the Chairman of Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control, the Former Director General of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Co-Chair of WELL Living Lab China. He graduated from Peking Medical University. He received both of his M.D. from Peking Medical University and Ph.D. from Jichi Medical School, Japan.

Dr. Wang has successively held the posts of the director of the Institute of Hepatology, Peking Medical University, the Vice President of Peking Medical University, and the Vice President of the Peking University Health Science Center. Then he transferred to the Ministry of Science and Technology as the deputy director of China National Center for Biotechnology Development (CNCBD), then the deputy director of Dept. of Science and Technology for Rural and Social Development. He was Director General of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2004 to 2017.

In academic field, he had long been dedicating to the research on hepatitis viruses and hepatology. He has been the member and the principal investigator of projects in the area of pathogenic microorganism funded by the National High-Tech. Research and Development Program ("863"Program), the State Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation. In science and technology management, Dr. Wang participated the response against SARS outbreak, and led the response to the emerging infectious diseases and public health emergencies, such as avian influenza epidemic, human infected with streptococcus suis, melamine-contaminated milk power incident, Wenchuan post-earthquake disease prevention and H1N1 Flu pandemic. He led and promoted national disease surveillance system, to initiative investigation and intervention of the areas with higher cancer prevalence. Internationally, he led and participated the response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and has actively involved in the initiative of the public health system strengthening in Africa.

In recent years, Dr. Wang has published research articles at the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and others. He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He was awarded the First and Second Prize of Scientific and technological Progress Awards of Ministry of Health, First and Special Prize of the State Scientific and technological Progress awards.

Dr. Wang is the Vice president of Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, Executive director of the Chinese Medical Association and the member of the Academic Committee of this Association. Internationally, he serves as the member of WHO Emergency Committee concerning Polio and the member of the WHO Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication in the Western Pacific.
