Betsy Schwartz

VP for Public Education and Strategic Initiatives

Betsy Schwartz oversees the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program at the National Council for Behavioral Health; MHFA is a public education program taught throughout the USA by over 18,000 instructors has trained over two million Americans. She leads the headquarter infrastructure for MHFA including a team of 39 and an annual budget of $26 million. MHFA, an international program evidence-based practice, is positioned to become as common as First Aid and CPR. Ms. Schwartz also leads collaboration with national organizations to build partnerships for MHFA including a partnership with the Born This Way Foundation, a program created by Lady Gaga to address youth mental health issues.

Prior to coming to the National Council, Schwartz was CEO of the Mental Health America of Greater Houston for 30 years. Schwartz is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum and WK Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Alliance. Her awards include being the recipient of the Houston Psychological Association’s Public Citizen of the Year award and a 2000 Houston “Women on the Move”.

Betsy received her MSW in Policy, Administration and Management from the University of Houston and her BA in History and Sociology from the University of Denver.
