WELL single-asset certification transitions to IWBI

Micah Silvey of GBCI and Jessica Cooper of IWBI share their thoughts on the WELL Certification transition.

For more than a decade, GBCI and IWBI have teamed up to deliver WELL to the market—bridging WELL’s vision for healthy buildings with GBCI’s global leadership in green building certification. Since WELL’s 2014 launch, we’re proud of how this partnership has helped transform how projects prioritize health and well-being, bringing credibility, rigor, and trusted third-party processes to clients and the industry.

Now that the formal certification services contract between our two organizations has concluded, we’ve mutually agreed that the WELL single-asset certification work administered by GBCI will transition to IWBI. This administrative scope will be absorbed by IWBI, and reviews will continue to be conducted by the same network of third-party reviewers that also conduct WELL at scale and WELL rating reviews. While responsibilities shift, our commitment does not. GBCI, USGBC, and IWBI will continue our strategic partnership where it best serves the market, including joint advocacy and thought leadership.

On a personal note, the two of us have worked closely together, collaborating at each step and each milestone over the life of this partnership. Micah participated in the inaugural WELL AP training and helped oversee certification delivery from the beginning. Jessica was guiding many of the first WELL projects through the process, working alongside Micah and all of those on the GBCI team who brought passion and professionalism to the work and our shared goals. Moving forward, we remain steadfast in our mission and confident that, together with our community, we will continue to accelerate a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
