IWBI is at Futurebuild 2020

The International WELL Building Institute returns in 2020 as a strategic partner of Futurebuild and headline partner of the Interiors Hub, together with Milliken, to demonstrate the benefits of supporting people’s health and well-being inside our buildings.

Join IWBI and Milliken at the Futurebuild Interiors Hub (C130) as we showcase the latest research, case studies and practical design guidance. Together we have curated content for the Interior Hub’s seminar programme, with a focus on health and well-being in building design, materials, build and use.

Featured keynote speakers include Cees van der Spek, Public Affairs & Global Corporate Relations Director, EDGE Technologies; Dr Julia Jones, CEO of Found in Music; and Dr Ken van Someren, Director of Performance at Boost Cognition and past Performance Coach of Team GB.

Additional discussions will include how buildings can advance human health, indoor air quality, spotlights on health in coworking spaces and within the construction sector, the benefits of biophilic design, and the WELL Building Standard (WELL) at scale. Connect with industry peers and participate in a dozen sessions across the three-day exhibition and London’s ExCeL.

Visit the IWBI team – Ann Marie Aguilar, Mona Holtkötter, Laura Wilkes, Eleftherios Zacharakis and Kristen Coco – at the Interiors Hub to learn more about WELL and better buildings that help people thrive.

Measuring the Value of Good Design for Well-being
A lot is written and said about designing for well-being and occupant comfort and productivity. However, how do you know if what you are designing will work? What is the value of pre- and post-occupancy evaluation? How can you apply science and measurement to something that is personal and ‘human’? How can you go about understanding whether the products you specify will maximise wellness?

  • Chair: Oliver Heath, Oliver Heath Design
  • The value of well-being and good design: Oliver Heath, Director, Oliver Heath Design
  • Quantitative or Qualitative – which works best for pre- and post-occupancy evaluation?: Mindy Hadi, Principal Consultant, BRE
  • Assessing artificial skylights and impacts on well-being and performance: Cosmin Ticleanu, Principal Consultant, Lighting, BRE

16.00-16.30
Embedding Acoustics into Design
No, you are not imagining it; the world is getting noisier. More machines, more people, more technology and increased travel is contributing to unprecedented global noise pollution. Despite the negative impact noise is having on our wellbeing, there is little guidance to support designers and specifiers in making informed specifications with consideration of acoustic performance and noise reduction. Discover the latest YouGov research commissioned by Geberit, as we unpick the causes of noise and the importance of embedding acoustics into design as well as outline the demand for clearer standards and regulations for acoustic performance and testing.

  • Lynne Clapham-Carter, Specification Manager, Geberit

Mace’s Commitment to Construction Worker Well-being
Collaboration is key in the management of well-being in the construction sector. In this session Dr Judith Grant, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Mace will share their strategic approach to health and well-being across the global construction and consultancy organisation and how they are using data to understand risks and measure impact. The work to track and implement effective well-being solutions has led to positive collaboration in the construction sector. Three case studies will be shared in this session. Greenwich Peninsula, one of the Mace Construction sites, acted on the well-being data and we will share how they use the work environment to enhance well-being. Dornan Engineering and GKR Scaffolding both took part in Mace’s collaborative Well-being Survey in July 2019 and with the data, and their own company insights, have developed organisational approaches to well-being which both will share in this session.

Better Buildings, Bodies and Brains

Today’s workplaces are more than just a place to work; they must enable workers to perform at their very best to deliver business results.
Unfortunately, many workplace transformation and employee well-being initiatives fail to make real impact and deliver a measurable return on investment. We lack meaningful productivity metrics for today’s knowledge workers and have only limited understanding of what underpins performance in the workplace.
Taking insights from the world of elite sport, arguably the ultimate arena for high performance, this session reveals novel approaches to measure and model performance in the workplace. Cognitive function, or brain power, underpins performance in both sport and the workplace. Cognitive abilities such as focus, flexibility, problem-solving and agility underpin decision-making and creativity.
This session explores the link between workplace environment, employee well-being and brain power. It illustrates how we can objectively measure employee performance to inform workplace and well-being initiatives to create better buildings, bodies and brains.

VSimulators: Human-centred Design for the Next Generation of Sustainable Buildings
This session will discuss how we might consider putting human experience at the heart of the design of buildings. The aim is to understand some of the drivers of sustainable future design and consider some of the unintended consequences on the people inthese buildings, from the point of view of well-being, health, comfort and productivity. We will discuss how the state-of-the-art VSimulators facility might help us investigate the issues involved.
