Everything you need to know about the WELL AP beta exam
The benefits and importance of the beta exam with information on how to prepare.
The WELL AP beta exam, based on the WELL Building Standard v2, was developed to ensure that WELL APs around the world have the knowledge and skills they need to promote, support and design people first places.
What is the WELL AP credential?
- The WELL Accredited Professional (AP) credential is the leading credential signifying advanced knowledge of health, safety and well-being in buildings, organizations and communities around the world. To receive the credential, applicants are required to pass an exam that tests proficiency in WELL.
What is a beta exam and why do we need it?
- A beta exam is an exam that contains a variety of questions validating skills identified during the exam development process. When you take an exam in its beta form, you’re providing useful information to evaluate the quality of the exam and its questions. After an exam has been through its beta process and we have incorporated relevant changes, we can ensure the exam is equipped to help WELL APs apply health and well-being strategies in their community, on WELL projects, at their jobs, and so much more.
What’s new with the beta exam?
- Based on the WELL Building Standard v2, this exam includes more analysis and application-based questions.
- 150 questions, 3 hours long
- The new WELL AP exam will feature a short project scenario. Some exam items will require you to refer to this scenario. This project scenario will not be published ahead of the new exam launch.
- Some exam questions may require you to refer to this “embedded content” - because we know practicing WELL APs need to apply WELL v2, not memorize it. You can find this content in the “Get to know the WELL AP exam” guide.
Why should you take the beta exam?
- As a beta exam taker, you will play a pivotal role in determining the WELL AP content for the v2 exam and leave your mark on our WELL AP community. Because of your important contribution, we are offering exam benefits and marketing opportunities exclusively to you.

Please note: We can’t begin scoring exams until we have a certain number of people take the beta exam. After we get a certain number of test-takers, the exam goes through a review cycle where we review the exam results and set a passing score. We are currently collecting this data during the beta exam phase. Exam scores will be determined and distributed in April 2022, when the WELL AP exam relaunches.
